Stress manifests in our bodies depending on daily life situations and how we react to them. Stress can benefit us at certain times or harm us if we maintain it for prolonged periods.

This tells us that not all stress is negative and harmful. We also experience positive stress, produced by states of happiness, unexpected joys, finally finding the solution to a problem, as well as other factors that bring us peace of mind and personal satisfaction.

A moderate amount of stress can help us react to less easy situations, such as how quickly you move when crossing a street and seeing a truck approaching at high speed, or when facing any momentary danger; when you are in a situation where you don't know what to do; or when you are under pressure to deliver a project on time. In these cases, the brain, when alerted to an emergency, danger, or urgency, produces chemicals that help you move quickly because the emergency mechanism, and sometimes the survival mechanism, is activated.

When a person lives under constant stress, the body cannot maintain a state of alert for very long. This has both physical and mental consequences and can diminish our quality of life with:

Sleep problems: difficulty falling asleep, waking up during the night, or feeling tired.

Mental difficulties: lack of concentration, memory problems, constant worry, or feeling overwhelmed.

Emotional changes: irritability, anxiety, sadness, or frequent mood swings.

Physical effects: headaches, muscle tension, digestive discomfort, and increased blood pressure.

Increased vulnerability: prolonged stress can affect the normal functioning of the immune system.

Exhaustion: can produce extreme tiredness, loss of motivation, and difficulty performing usual activities. This does not mean that everyone who experiences stress will develop these problems; however, chronic stress does deserve attention if it is interfering with sleep, work/study, relationships, or daily life.

It's important to be aware that constant or excessive stress can affect both the body and the mind. Therefore, learning to manage stress is crucial because it can help us:

Improve mental health: Reducing anxiety, irritability, and exhaustion.

Protect physical health: Prolonged stress can contribute to problems such as high blood pressure and other cardiovascular issues and weaken your immune system.

Sleep better: Stress can make it difficult to fall asleep.

Improve concentration and memory: When we are less stressed, it is usually easier to think clearly and make sound decisions.

Enhance overall well-being: Managing stress helps us have more energy and enjoy daily activities more.

Improve relationships: When we are less overwhelmed, it is easier to communicate and react patiently.

In short, learning to manage stress doesn't mean eliminating it completely, but rather preventing it from becoming excessive and affecting our quality of life.

And importantly: experiencing stress is not a sign of weakness. It's a normal bodily response; the important thing is to learn to manage it and seek help when it becomes harder to control. You can also help yourself by doing things like:

Dedicate time to enjoyable activities: walking, hobbies, music, being in contact with nature, reading, or spending time with interesting people.

Seek professional help: if stress is constant, very intense, or is affecting your daily life, talking to a psychologist or doctor may be a good option.

In the Silva Method, we teach you how you can learn to manage stress yourself, as it is one of the goals of our programs, through physical and mental relaxation, which, as a result, helps us better organize our lives.

For now, we'll leave you with a thought from Wayne Dyer, author and Silva Method graduate:

“The state of your life is nothing more than a reflection of the state of your mind”.

    Diana Castillo-Oulahan
    Silva Method Instructor

Learning to manage stress is a human necessity.
