Why Do We Resist Meditation?
The truth is, we know that meditation can benefit us in many ways, but somehow we find ourselves resisting doing meditation. First, you need to ask yourself: Why am I resisting it? Do you even know the reason for resisting? How does it feel when you resist?
Well, we have found out some reasons that usually lead you to avoid practice mindfulness meditation:
- Impatience: Many people expect instant results and find it hard to sit still without seeing immediate benefits.
- Overthinking: The mind can feel overwhelmed with thoughts, making it difficult to quiet the mind or focus.
- Lack of Time: We often feel that we’re too busy to take a moment for ourselves, even though meditation only requires a few minutes a day.
- Discomfort: Sitting still in one position for any length of time can feel uncomfortable or unnatural.
- Fear of Facing Emotions: Meditation can bring up suppressed feelings or discomfort, leading some to avoid the practice to keep their emotions at bay.
How to meditate for beginners at home
1.Settle Yourself
First, sit in a quiet place and prepare yourself to begin your meditation practice. Sit comfortably in a chair and keep your hands on your lap. Release all the tension from your muscles and neck and focus on the breath to dive deeper into the meditation practice.
2. Breathe Deeply
Focus on taking slow, deep breaths. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a moment, then exhale slowly through your mouth or nose. This helps center your mind, calms your nervous system, and brings your focus to the present moment.
3. Let Go of Distractions
Your mind may wander—don’t worry! Gently acknowledge any thoughts and bring your focus back to your breath without judgment.
4. Scan Your Body
Close your eyes, focus on your breath, and slowly scan your body from head to toe. Start with your toes and move up, noticing any tension or discomfort. Breathe deeply and relax yourself.
5. Begin with Short Sessions
You can start with 5-10 minutes of guided meditation practices and later on extend your time as per your comfort.
6. Prepare to Finish
As your meditation session comes to an end, gently bring your focus back to the present moment. Take a breath, wiggle your fingers and toes, and relax your body. Open your eyes when you’re ready, carrying the calm and clarity from your practice into the rest of your day.
Note: Always remember to be consistent & try to meditate at the same time every day, as this helps to build a proper routine in your everyday life.
